You know what sucks?
Posted: April 11, 2006 Filed under: Uncategorized 8 Comments »It sucks when you really believed something. You believed that someone who made you promises was going to come through. You believed that human nature is basically good. And then….
The contractor never came back.
Yes, I’m having Seder here the night after tomorrow. Lots of people. Lots, I say. And yes, my kitchen (which was supposed to be done last month) will not be ready. But does this suck? Well, yes, but it’s just a kitchen and my family won’t care at all. They’ll come back and see when it’s done and the night will be great. So, it’s fine and doesn’t suck that much.
But what really, really eats at me is that Andrew said this would happen. And I said, “You are just plain grumpy and don’t give people enough credit and you’re wrong. All wrong.” And, well… oops.
And the really, really, really saddest part is that I like being Little Mary Sunshine and I like thinking the best of everyone and I like thinking every experience is a good one and that life is grand. And each time someone proves you wrong, it chips a teeny piece of that away.
And that really sucks.

when one of us (me) screws up like that, rather than getting pounded with ‘I told you so’s’ The peron who was wrong says:
“I was soooo wrong, and you were sooooo right”
the levity helps…
don’t let one person make you give up on being Mary Sunshine…we need Mary Sunshine’s…people will disappoint, but don’t let them change who you are.
okay, that’s my little lecture for the evening.
I’m more like Andrew in this regard, and DH is more like you. In our first house we tore out the drywall in the kitchen and hired an “independent” to hang and mud the drywall. Before the job was done DH paid him in full and we never saw him again.
But he left his drywall stilts. Watching DH try to mud the ceiling on drywall stilts was WAY better than “I told you so.”
And we DO need Miss Mary Sunshine, to balance Nancy Naysayer. Yours is the harder job, I think.
i don’t know which is worse: being negative so you’re not suprised when people disappoint you (like me) or being surprised by people letting you down because you expect more.
i don’t know. :/
(but i’m sorry your kitchen isn’t finished. that sucks. it’s still gorgeous.)
Steakbellie – I like that. I’ll have to try it next time.
Crusin – Thanks. I needed that!
Shy Smiley – I laughed! And I never heard Nancy Naysayer before! In our house, it’ll have to be Neville Naysayer… love it!
Kristin – Thanks – I’m glad you like it! I don’t know which is worse either, but I can’t stand feeling this way!
Ah, that’s a drag. I’m sorry to say this, but contractors are notorious for that kinda stuff. I’m still waiting for my guy to finish our roof. It’s taken him forever, and he always has another story as to why he hasn’t come.
In my dream house, I have a separate pesach kitchen (yes, there is such a thing, and damn, do I want one). Anyway, whenever I settle down to think about my dream house, I always have to calculate how long before pesach I’m going to have to hire a contractor so my little kitchen will be finished in time. Probably a year in advance!
Have a great Seder anyway.
The nightmare stories about contractors abound.
Karma is real. In the grand balance of things, your life will be better because you exude so much positive energy. And people like your contractor will have more miserable lives, on balance. Don’t give in. Karma is on your side.
