Remember the old joke?

You know. The one that says ‘everyone change underwear. Bradley, change with Smith. Smith, change with Johnson. etc.’

Well, this came in my inbox today.

All I can say is ewwwww.

Glory is forever.
Chicks dig scars.

Top Chef.

Davis has always loved to cook. Here he is at 2 years old – with his apron (and White Bear) and ready to go.

I bought him a kid sized baking set with a real rolling pin, spatula, airbake cookie sheet. We got a knife from Pampered Chef that was kid-friendly (see photo to the right) and he’d help cut carrots and more. He started using the toaster oven shortly thereafter.

More recently, he has become fascinated with plating. He makes a beautiful plate.

You know he made me a carrot cake. Yum! He and I took a cooking class the other day at L’Acadamie de Cuisine in Bethesda. It was fun, but a little too basic for him. (Not for me, though. Sigh.)

I am amazed when I see him with a big sharp knife delicately chopping shallots or onions. He really is a natural.

I am happy to be the tester. It’s a job I was made for.

His love of cooking has inspired his brothers to be more adventurous in their eating. Last night, we had poached chicken with a tomato, olive, and Italian bean sauce. Sure beats pizza, hot dogs and mac & cheese.

Andrew tells the boys they should cook because it impresses girls. I say they should cook because it’s an important (and fun?) skill. Truth is, it does impress girls. Why do you think I kept dating Andrew? (Okay, it wasn’t JUST his cooking.)

I won’t be surprised if one day, Davis becomes a chef. But even if he just cooks for the love of it, I’ll be the proud mom.

I’m a winner!

DJ Kirby was nice enough to award me with this honor. Thanks DJ!

And now, as tradition dictates, I would like to pass the baton. I hereby award the smile award to Gnightgirl who always makes me smile and Ezer for talking astronomy on the day my new telescope arrived and Jinn who has a special place in my family’s collective heart and Stephanie for her funny post about the people at the gym. Hysterical.

Truth be told, the blogs I read regularly all make me smile. Hmmm. Maybe that’s why I read them regularly!

I hope your weekend was as wonderful as mine was.

One is silver and the other’s gold.

An old friend of mine stopped by today. She’s in town for wedding.

She lives far away and we haven’t seen each other in probably 2 years. But as always, we picked up right where we left off – laughing and talking…

Thanks for making time for me on your quick weekend in town, Stephanie!

I had to share this. Nice birthday sentiment, don’t you think?

Who doesn’t love birthday cake?

Davis made me this beautiful carrot cake. I’m plan on eating a small dinner to make sure I have plenty of room for cake.

Thursday Thirteen.

Sometimes, with a little effort, you can take something that is good and make it better. Case in point, my kitchen. Today, I’ll tell you 13 things that are better now then they were before.

Before.
After.

1 See kitchen above.

2 Davis’ cooking skills. (He just made me a birthday carrot cake…from scratch!)

3 Cell phones. Remember those clunky ones from back in the day?

4 Pencils. Seriously, check out Ticonderoga’s tri-write. They don’t roll.

5 Digital Cameras. I don’t miss film at all. My crummy pictures don’t cost me anything at all! Plus, I don’t get those notes in my pix from the developing house with ‘hints’ for better photos. Yikes.

6 My kids. We can do more fun things as they get bigger. It’s great.

7 Bedtime. I used to hate it. Now I love it.

8 Speaking of bedtime – my sheets are better with every wash. But I know you don’t want to hear about that again.

9 My iPod library. I’ve added some great new music lately!

10 My workouts with Cyrus. Definitely stepped it up a bit. It’s challenging, but I really like it (in a weird sort of way).

11 TV. Well, really it’s the DVR. It just makes the TV experience so much better, in my opinion. And yes, I still watch commercials. (Well, some of them.)

12 Max’s saxophone playing. Not much better, but he can play some notes! (Reed’s trumpet playing is really getting great!)

13 My life. Never boring. Keeps getting better. I’m a lucky girl.

WOW!!!!!

A guest post from Andrew.
By now, you may have figured out that we get very excited about certain things. Good food, friends, and family time together. And despite the dislike by certain members of our family of certain holidays, the one thing we can all agree on is birthdays.

We go out of our way to make the celebrant feel special – breakfast in bed, birthday songs, a greater influence on family activities – you get the picture. And one of the best features is that we try and make the celebration last as long as possible. So welcome to WOW!!!!! – The Week of Wendy.
A brief run-down of the special WOW!!!!! activities to date:
Sunday – WOW!!!!! begins. I run carpool in the morning, go grocery shopping, and try to keep the kids out of her hair for the day. Moderately successful despite the fact that she loses the draft of her blook and has to start again.

Monday – furious planning by me and the boys for the rest of the week (shhhh – don’t tell). I help with homework, and hope that Max learns that he has to bring his books home. We exchange anniversary cards, and she gives the an awesome card/painting. Honey, all I can say is 459.

Tuesday – our anniversary. Although we didn’t set out to have our wedding day so close to her birthday, it just kind of happened. Well, not really, but that’s another story. So I really make an effort to celebrate both days with the energy they deserve. I make dinner reservations for our night out in DC on 10/27 (don’t call us), and cook for her shrimp poached in butter, rice, and sauteed sugar snaps, with a nice bottle of Gruet sparkling wine.

And the rest of the week? You’ll just have to wait for the next post.

Pimp my screen.

Typically, I have very contemporary taste. Clean lines. Contrasting colors. Geometric shapes. If you’ve ever seen my house, you know what I mean.

Oh, and I despise clutter.

So, you might find it hard to believe…. but I let Davis pimp my screen.

He downloaded a theme for my Firefox browser with all sorts of gold and bling and fur and leopard print.

And I love it.

Why, you ask?

Honestly, I have no idea. Maybe because I secretly covet the gangsta lifestyle? Uh, no. That’s not it.

Maybe because I’d never publicly do any of this. Perhaps.

But it feels like wearing a really, scanty, lacy thong under a business suit. It’s like my little secret.

Except that I just told you. (so keep it to yourself.)
