Each week, the show started with ‘Tijuana Taxi’- a song I knew because my parents had the Herb Alpert record. They had a game where you had to, blindfolded, put your hand in a plate of stuff. It was always gross. There was a balloon popping game. And other silliness. It was a blast. Stu Kerr, the host was goofy and (at least to preschoolers) hysterically funny.
And then, there was the theme song. Sang to the tune of Jingle Bells:
“We like school
we like school,
cause it’s lots of fun.
Singing, laughing, playing games,
blues are on the run.
We like school
we like school,
love to hear the bell.
For our teacher Professor Kool
let’s give him a great big yell!”
Somehow (and I don’t remember how) I got to go on the show! I was about 5, I’d say. The ‘students’ sat in rows off to the side. Kind of like a jury, if you know what I mean. We were part of some of the antics and some was just the Professor.
I was excited to go! I wore my favorite blue and red dress. I couldn’t stop smiling.
The show started. They told us to be quiet and to react as instructed, so we didn’t mess up the show. I’m sure they said it nicer.
So the song plays and everything is going along nicely. And then….
This witch comes running out from nowhere. She was slight; I remember that. She had this evil cackle and it wouldn’t stop. I freaked out.
I started crying uncontrollably and (if I recall correctly) yelled, “make her go away!”
They must have misunderstood, because it was me that they made go away. Scooped me up and off the show.
Oh, the trauma.
