Nights In White Satin

Note: This brief post was inspired by a poster that a current high school student made for her boyfriend. It seemed so old school and awesome. And it reminded me of this story:

When I was a senior in high school, I made a huge poster for my boyfriend – it was illustrated and I wrote the lyrics to this song in calligraphy. It took me hours and hours and hours to do.

As I read the words, I can’t for the life of me imagine what my point was. Aside from the fact that I clearly thought I loved him.

Nights in white satin,
Never reaching the end,
Letters I’ve written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty I’d always missed
With these eyes before,
Just what the truth is
I can’t say anymore.

‘Cause I love you,
Yes, I love you,
Oh, how, I love you.

Gazing at people,
Some hand in hand,
Just what I’m going thru
They can understand.

Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend,
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end,

And I love you,
Yes, I love you,
Oh, how, I love you.
Oh, how, I love you.

Nights in white satin,
Never reaching the end,
Letters I’ve written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty I’d always missed
With these eyes before,
Just what the truth is
I can’t say anymore.

‘Cause I love you,
Yes, I love you,
Oh, how, I love you.
Oh, how, I love you.

‘Cause I love you,
Yes, I love you,
Oh, how, I love you.
Oh, how, I love you.

We did not break up after high school. He visited me once at college – first semester Freshman year. Then, since he’d deferred college, he decided to go to California to visit his brother. He never came back. We actually never officially broke up, but when I received an invitation to his wedding in the mail a little later that year, I suspected it was really over.

If only we’d had Facebook back then, I’d have gotten a heads up when his relationship status changed.
